Man Has Cold Encounter With Morrisville Police Officer
Morrisville police have charged a man with assault on a government official after an officer said the man coughed into his face during a traffic stop.
Officer Chris Gill said in his report that Kent Kauffman looked into his eyes before “hacking” in his face three times, according to Morrisville spokeswoman Stacie Galloway. Kauffman said he did cough from the window of his minivan but did so toward Gill’s waist.
“He says I coughed in his face,” Kauffman said. “But that would only work if he had a 4-foot-long face.”
As Prices Soar, U.S. Food Aid Buys Less
As Prices Soar, U.S. Food Aid Buys Less
Soaring food prices, driven in part by demand for ethanol made from corn, have helped slash the amount of food aid the government buys to its lowest level in a decade, possibly resulting in more hungry people around the world this year.
Corn prices have fallen in recent months, but are still far higher than they were a year ago. Demand for ethanol has also indirectly driven the rising price of soybeans, as land that had been planted with soybeans shifted to corn. And wheat prices have skyrocketed, in large part because drought hurt production in Australia, a major producer, economists say.
The higher food prices have not only reduced the amount of American food aid for the hungry, but are also making it harder for the poorest people to buy food for themselves, economists and advocates for the hungry say.

Radio burst from space mystifies astronomers
Astronomers who stumbled upon a powerful burst of radio waves said on Thursday they had never seen anything like it before, and it could offer a new way to search for colliding stars or dying black holes.
They were searching for pulsars — a type of rotating compacted neutron star that sends out rhythmic pulses of radiation — when they spotted the giant radio signal.
It was extremely brief but very strong, and appears to have come from about 3 billion light-years away — a light-year being the distance light travels in a year, or about 6 trillion miles.

6 Nuns in Ark. Excommunicated for Heresy

Six Catholic nuns have been excommunicated for heresy after refusing to give up membership in a Canadian sect whose founder claims to be possessed by the Virgin Mary, the Diocese of Little Rock announced Wednesday.
The Rev. J. Gaston Hebert, the diocese administrator, said he notified the nuns of the decision Tuesday night after they refused to recant the teachings of the Community of the Lady of All Nations, also known as the Army of Mary.
The Vatican has declared all members of the Army of Mary excommunicated. Hebert said the excommunication was the first in the diocese’s 165-year history.

Romanian MPs reject sale of Dracula’s castle
Romania’s lower house of parliament on Tuesday approved a parliamentary report which says Bran Castle, better known as Dracula’s castle, cannot be sold by its owner.
The MPs, most of them from the left-wing opposition, also claim that the manner in which the 14th century building was returned to its legal owner, Archduke Dominic von Habsburg, was unlawful, due to procedural errors.
Located in the Carpathian Mountains, some 170 km north of the capital, Bucharest, the Castle is visited by about 450,000 tourists each year.
