A couple of large boulders in Farmington Hills are carved with a number of symbols that appear to be hieroglyphics.

The writings are similar to the ancient writings of the Minoans and Phoenicians, who sailed the world well before Egypt became a power in the ancient world.

The Minoans lived on a Greek Island and had a well-developed civilization with indoor plumbing and beautiful art. Their civilization disappeared either because of an earthquake or volcanic eruption. They were a sea sailing civilization as were the Phoenicians.

44th Known Mersenne Prime Found

Lightning strikes twice. On September 4, 2006, in the same room just a few feet away from their last find, Dr. Curtis Cooper and Dr. Steven Boone’s CMSU team broke their own world record, discovering the 44th known Mersenne prime, 2^32,582,657-1.

The new prime at 9,808,358 digits is 650,000 digits larger than their previous record prime found last December.

However, the new prime falls short of the 10 million digits required for GIMPS to claim the Electronic Frontier Foundation $100,000 award.

Ancient Pregnant Reptile Fossil Discovered Under Pingpong Table
Three new species of an ancient marine reptile, including a pregnant fossil, were recently discovered by University of Alberta paleontologists—under a pingpong table.

The ichthyosaur fossils were unearthed from the Loon River Formation in Canada’s Northwest Territories 25 years ago, then languished under the pingpong table in the undergraduate science lab until they were rediscovered by newly hired faculty member Michael Caldwell.

“It was pretty amazing to realize this valuable discovery had sat under a pingpong table for 25 years,” Caldwell said. “But I suppose that after 100 million years in the dirt, it’s all relative.”

One Sentence Stories

One Sentence Stories

One Sentence is an experiment in brevity. Most of the best stories that we tell from our lives have one really, really good part that make the rest of the boring story worth it.

This is about that one line.

This is about telling the most interesting or poignant story possible in the least amount of words.

“For you? Really?” the man in the pharmacy said, surprised, when I asked him to pass me a pregnancy test.

Human stem cells help blinded rats: study

Human embryonic stem cells can partly restore vision in blinded rats, and may offer a source of transplants for people with certain eye diseases, researchers at a U.S. company reported on Thursday.

The finding, published in the journal Cloning and Stem Cells, might offer a way to use stem cells that now exist in laboratories, the researchers said.

“We have developed a technology that we hope can be used to treat degenerative eye diseases such as macular degeneration,” said Dr. Robert Lanza of Advanced Cell Technology in Worcester, Massachusetts, who led the study.
